My Journey in Islam

Using objects and film young people from the Young Ummah project in Brighton explore the Five Pillars of Islam. They discuss how their Muslim faith is woven into their everyday lives.

The sacred pilgrimage to Makka must be undertaken at least once in a lifetime and they discuss the experience and its importance to them.

  • Islam has been a central part of European history for centuries. In Spain, Muslim rule was established for 700 years between  the 8th and the 15th centuries. During this time libraries, colleges, public baths were established and literature, poetry and architecture flourished.
  • From the 7th Century until the 17th Century  Islamic universities were world leaders in mathematics, medicine, science, law, architecture and art.  This period is known as the Islamic Golden Age.
  • In Islam both women and men should both dress modestly.  The veil is not an obligation and whilst some women choose to cover every part of the body except their face and hands others only cover their hair, or do not observe any special dress rules.
  • Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, followed by Christianity.
  • Islam is one of the Abrahamic family of faiths that also includes Judaism and Christianity. Muslims recognize Abraham, Moses, Jesus and other Biblical figures as Prophets.
